Origin

NEWSOME is a homage to Betty Newsome: the original writer of the behind the iconic song performed by James Brown. In 1966 Newsome was granted credit in the Newsome vs. Brown case. Through her self-advocacy, she attained rights and royalties for her work. Despite the common misinterpretation that the song is about women’s empowerment, reflected through the male gaze, the truth underlying the lyrics points to a deeper criticism of the underlying systems of oppression that plague and pain all genders through patriarchal colonialism.

The act begs the audience to question: How do you create the life you want, living by the rules you want?
