Aerial Silks Act Performed by Lynsey Wyatt to "It's A Man's Man's Man's World”

NEWSOME is a homage to Betty Newsome, the original writer behind the iconic song performed by James Brown. In 1966, through determined self-advocacy, Newsome secured credit, rights, and royalties for her work in the landmark Newsome vs. Brown case.

“It’s A Man’s World” is often misinterpreted as a celebration of women’s empowerment through the male gaze. However, its true essence points to how patriarchal colonial systems of oppression plague and distort the lives of all genders. The minimalist costume, adorned with a QR code, alludes to the commodification of the body while harnessing the transcendental potential of the digital age, transporting and inviting viewers to gain a deeper understanding of Betty Newsome’s legacy and the performer’s inner world.
